Minutes from Reservoir Characterization SING meeting, January 31’st 2002 at NPD

Referent:  K. Buer

Participants:  Kjell Buer (BP), Trond Kristensen (DNO), Arild Haugen (NPD), Anke Wolff (NPD) Adrian White (Shell), Robert Trice (Enterprise), Jean-Marc Feroul (TFE),  Edward Prestholm (Statoil),  Tore H. Hanssen (Fortum)

The delegate from Phillips :Claus Clausen (replacing Niels Venzel) could not attend this meeting. Tore H. Hanssen (Fortum) met instead of Aasmund Bruland (Fortum)

A reminder and agenda for this meeting was sent out about a week prior to the meeting.

Agenda:

1. Introduction and going through the minutes from last meeting

2. Presentation by Enterprise, Bob, Trice: Towards an improved understanding of shale properties for exploration applications.

3. Discussions linked to the theme of the day

4. Selection of theme from next meeting and meeting date.

5. General discussion - Possible cooperation with other SING groups.

1. Minutes from last meeting.
Minutes from the last meeting November 16’Th 2001 were distributed by mail and as attachment in the beginning of December 2001. The meeting started with the minutes and these were approved.

The meeting started with a welcome to the new member of the SING group,  Jean Marc Feroul from TFE (jean-marc.feroul@ep.totalfinaelf.no. A short and general presentation of the participants and objective of the group were given for Jean Marc’s benefit. Thereafter Arild Haugen had a short presentation of the other activities in the Force (Sing groups). We thought it would be a good idea to distribute a list of the other Sing group activities and seminars. It was again stressed that it is very important that we keep in contact with other groups, because reservoir Characterization covers a large field.

2. Presentation of the Topic of the day
Robert Trice gave a presentation: Towards an improved understanding of shale properties for exploration applications.  It was an excellent presentation and gave an introduction into the effects of shale above and within the sedimentary column on the interpretation of reservoir properties/fluid type. In general shale and its properties have not been a focus, one has in general assumed uniform behavior laterally.  It is possible that good conceptual models are needed.

 3. Discussions linked to the theme of the day
It was a good discussion following the presentation.  The presentation seemed to touch on central problem area in exploration and target classification.  It was therefore decided that the different companies should look into this problem area and bring forward relevant information and documentation for a follow up in the next meeting.

Items to follow up: Documented regional shale trends, Database on shale properties, seismic and petrophysic character, upscaling/downscaling issues, shale geo-chemistry etc. It is possible that the theme may form a basis for a seminar later this year?

However it was also underlined that we should keep in mind the original aim of this SING group: Bridging the gap between G&G and Reservoir engineering and that we should continue the focus on typical reservoir characterization issues, like Upscaling and integration, geomodel vs. simulation model - integration. The value of reservoir characterization, combination of sedimentary settings and reservoir characterization, deterministic vs. stochastic modeling, 4D and 4C data used as foundation for reservoir model updates, workflow issues etc.

A suggestion was also made to use the actual steps in the workflow for 3D model building as the selection criteria for workshop topics.

NB! If we want to improve the gap between G&G and Res. Engineering we should take steps to include at least one reservoir engineer in our regular meetings.

The theme for the next scheduled meeting will be presented by Adrian White (Shell) and will be focused on the Draugen Field.

4. General discussion.
We have been contacted by the SING group on sedimentary issues. They suggest in their latest minutes that we should plan for a joint seminar later this year (Autumn time). It was thought hat this was a good idea because of the close relationship between reservoir characterization and sedimentary processes/depositional settings. I will follow this up and keep in contact with the SING group on sedimentary processes.

Schedule next meeting.
Next meeting is scheduled for Monday April 8’Th 2002, 9:30 - 12:30 at Shell

Kjell Buer will call the meeting
