Opportunities and challenges in the southern Norwegian Barents Sea_main_img

This Lunch & Learn will start by setting the Norwegian Barents Sea in its geopolitical context.

The Western Barents Sea was long considered to be a gas basin, but since the Goliat discovery in 2000 and Loppa area discoveries from 2011 and onwards, oil has been proved more abundantly than previously expected. An interesting well is to be drilled in the eastern part this summer, testing the Realgrunnen Subgroup play in a large structure, so we will soon know if another oil play is potentially viable in the eastern part of the Norwegian Barents Sea.

In the western margin, however, can the rather disappointing wells really be considered as representative for the large basins, could there still be very large structures hidden in the area, and do we really still think there is only gas to be found there? A new study opens up for the possibility of a viable oil play in the western margin.

During this Lunch & Learn, we’ll go through the following points, so get ready to learn and be inspired – perhaps you will pick up the missing piece in the puzzle that will enable you to come up with an interesting prospect for the APA2017 or the 24th Concession Round?

  • Influence of different orogenies and the impact of the opening of the Atlantic Ocean
  • Why it is important to understand the architecture of the paleozoic grabens, how they formed and when many of them were inverted
  • Potential source rocks in the different areas, and which plays that could be viable in the different areas of the region
  • The challenge of lithostratigraphy in the western area, and why a detailed chronostratigraphic approach is necessary
